  3. This is the README.TXT file for the 32-bit version
  4. of Icon Studio version 1.0.  This software requires
  5. Windows NT 3.5 or higher Windows NT platform.  A
  6. 16-bit version of Icon Studio is available for use
  7. with Windows 3.1 or higher 16-bit Windows platform.
  8. Please contact Impact Software for more information.

  10. OVERVIEW
  11. --------
  12. Icon Studio can be used as a standalone application
  13. to edit icon resource (*.ICO) files.  It can also
  14. integrate seamlessly with Icon Manager, a full-
  15. featured utility for managing icons in many file
  16. formats including ICO, DLL, EXE, and ICL files.

  18.  
  19. Icon Studio offers many tools to simplify icon
  20. editing in a work environment designed specifically
  21. for small graphic images.  A status panel provides
  22. an actual size view of the drawing area and the
  23. current cursor position.  Extensive Undo and Redo
  24. capabilities encourage creativity and experi-
  25. mentation while designing.
  26.  
  27. Editing of 32 x 32 pixel, 16 color icon
  28. images is supported with Icon Studio, however
  29. it will not disturb other image formats when
  30. editing a file.

  33. most complete icon management package
  34. available, please consider our Icon
  35. Manager application.  Icon Manager
  36. reads and writes all file formats that contain
  37. icons, including ICO, EXE, DLL, ICL and ICA.
  38. Icon Studio integrates seamlessly as an
  39. image editor beginning in version 3.6 of Icon
  40. Manager (available on the CompuServe
  41. WINFUN forum, on America Online, and on
  42. our own support BBS.)

  44. Register Icon Studio, and we'll register you
  45. for Icon Manager for only $10 more (that's
  46. less than HALF of the normal cost).

  48. REGISTRATION
  49. ------------
  50. Icon Studio is not free software.  It is released
  51. as shareware, which provides the opportunity for
  52. the program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  53.  
  54. We hope that after you try Icon Studio you will
  55. like it so much that you will want to register.
  56. By doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  57. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  58. shareware.

  63. DOCUMENTATION
  64. -------------
  65. The file MANUAL.WRI contains a detailed overview
  66. of the features of Icon Studio and how they are
  67. used.

  69. Icon Studio also includes on-line help covering
  70. all aspects of program operation, accessible
  71. directly from the main menu.

  74. INSTALLING ICON Studio
  75. -----------------------
  76. The Icon Studio package includes a graphical Windows
  77. installation program.  The name of the utility for
  78. installing to 32-bit Windows platforms such as
  79. Windows NT 3.5 SETUP32.EXE.
  80.  
  81. You should place all of the files included in the package
  82. on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of your hard
  83. drive.
  84.  
  85. Run SETUP32 by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  86. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  87. "d:\SETUP32" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  88. drive/directory that you are installing Icon Studio FROM
  89. (i.e. A:\SETUP32).
  90.  
  91. 1. SETUP will then display an Installation Control window.
  92.    Three pushbuttons allow you to change the FROM and TO
  93.    drives and paths for your install.  SETUP initially
  94.    sets these values for you so that you can just click
  95.    the Install button if you do not need to make changes.
  96.  
  97. 2. If you would like to specify a different path for SETUP
  98.    to install Icon Studio to, select "Install To".  A
  99.    dialog will be displayed to allow a new location to be
  100.    selected.
  101.  
  102.    If you plan to use Icon Manager and Icon Studio, you
  103.    you should install both programs to the same location
  104.    on your computer. (see below, "Icon Manager")
  105.  
  106. 3. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  107.    SETUP will allow a Program Group to be selected
  108.    to receive the startup icon for Icon Studio.  Select
  109.    the "Program Group" button to select the group that
  110.    will receive the startup icon.
  111.  
  112. 4. Select 'OK'.  SETUP will inform you when installation
  113.    is complete.
  114.  
  115. ICON MANAGER
  116. ------------
  117. Impact Software offers a quality utility for all aspects
  118. of icon management, Icon Manager.  Icon Manager and
  119. Icon Studio integrate seamlessly when used together.
  120.  
  121. Icon Manager allows you to open different file formats
  122. that contain embedded icons, such as ICO, EXE, DLL, and
  123. more.  The icons contained in a file are presented to
  124. you in sizeable windows, just like the Program Groups
  125. are displayed by Program Manager.  Easily drag and drop
  126. single or multiple icons from one file to another.

  128. Organize your own icon file libraries.  Icon Manager
  129. will directly replace any icon in your Program Manager
  130. groups with any icon you view from Icon Manager.  It
  131. performs all of the work using DDE (Dynamic Data
  132. Exchange).  That means that the icon information is
  133. changed just as accurately and as easily as the setup
  134. utilities that install your applications.
  135.  
  136. Icon Manager and Icon Studio are distributed for evaluation
  137. in separate file packages to provide the smallest size
  138. modules for users who download software for evaluation.
  139.  
  140. When both Icon Manager and Icon Studio are installed on the
  141. same computer, they should be placed in the same directory
  142. on your hard drive.  Icon Manager will use Icon Studio for
  143. editing requests if it finds the program in the same
  144. directory that it is executed from.  If you would like Icon
  145. Manager to use Windows Paintbrush instead of Icon Studio,
  146. remove or rename the Icon Studio program (ICSTUD16.EXE or
  147. ICSTUDIO.EXE) if it is located in Icon Manager's directory.

  157.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  158.  
  159.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Icon
  160.  Studio on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining
  161.  whether Icon Studio is suitable for their needs.  The use
  162.  of Icon Studio, except for the initial 30-day trial,
  163.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Icon
  164.  Studio, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person,
  165.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is
  166.  strictly prohibited.
  167.  
  168.  A single user license permits a user to use Icon Studio
  169.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  170.  program on different computers, as long as there is NO
  171.  POSSIBILITY of it being used at one location while it is
  172.  being used at another, or on a computer network by more than
  173.  one user at a time.
  174.  
  175.  No one may modify or patch the Icon Studio executable files
  176.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling,
  177.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program.

  179.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Icon Studio
  180.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above
  181.  limitations, and also the following:
  182.  
  183.   1)    Icon Studio and all of its release files must be copied
  184.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  185.         this license information.
  186.  
  187.   2)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  188.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  189.  
  190.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  191.            may make Icon Studio available for downloading only as
  192.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  193.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  194.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  195.            charge for the download of Icon Studio.
  196.  
  197.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  198.            the ASP may distribute Icon Studio, subject to the
  199.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  200.            approved vendors may distribute Icon Studio only after
  201.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  202.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  203.            details (enclose your catalog).

  205.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the
  206.            Icon Studio diskette to their members, subject to
  207.            the above conditions, without specific permission.
  208.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee
  209.            not to exceed five dollars.
  210.  
  211.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  212.  
  213.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  214.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  215.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  216.   purchase.
  217.  
  218.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  219.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  220.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  221.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  222.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  223.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  224.  
  225.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  226.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  227.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  228.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  229.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  230.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  231.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  232.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  233.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  234.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  235.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  236.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  237.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  238.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  240.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  241.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  242.   contents.

  244.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  245.  
  246.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  247.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  248.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
